Jesmonite@ AC 100 Users' Guide

Mixing:

Jesmonite is a mixture of powder and liquid and can be mixed at a max of 3 powders : 1 liquid and a minimum of 2 powders : 1 liquid, to acheive different working properties and viscosities. Most economically mixed at 3:1. mix the two components together using a high shear blade in an electric drill at around 1000rpm. mix until there are no lumps , don't over mix as you may entrap some air bubbbles.

PIGMENT
The pigments are added to the liquids and should be thoroughly dispersed by slow speed use of the high shear mixer prior to adding the powder.
All the pigments are intermixable to enable any colour to be achieved, different tones are achieved by quantity.
It is recommended not to exceed 2% (20 9 per kg) of total mix.

Thixotrope
When working into a multi piece mould or when laminating it may be necessary to thicken the material to gel coat consistency.
Thixotrope should be added to the material after mixing and will allow the user to put down a 2-3mm layer in one pass. It should be added drop by drop to the mix using the high shear mixer until the desired consistency is achieved. N ote: the thickener is very reactive and as such should be added slowly. typically between 1g and 4g per kilo of total mix.

Laminating
After applying the gel coat it is possible to create a laminated structure. Quadaxial glass fabric is used for the reinforcement of laminated structures. It is only necessary to use two layers of the fabric.
Firstly 'wet out' the back of the gel coat using unthickened material and apply the first layer of glass fabric reinforcement. Then 'wet out' the first layer thoroughly to ensure complete incorporation of the reinforcement.
The other layer of fabric is spaced by a layer of Jesmonite AC 100 mixed with 6mm c~opped glass strand to create a 'slurry'. Apply a 2-3mm layer of this chopped strand mlx. Apply the second layer of fabric and 'wet out' to complete the lamination. This will result in a 'sandwich-like' composite structure for use as a panel or a mould case for example. By increasing the thickness of the spacing mix a stiffer laminate will be constructed.

Stone fillers
Stone finishes using Jesmonite AC 100 can be achieved by the use of special fillers. Four stone fillers are available in the following colours:
1) Yellow Sandstone 2) White Marble
3) Silver Grey Granite 4) Portland Stone


Metal fillers
Metal finishes using Jesmonite AC 100 can be achieved by the use of special fillers. Four metal fillers are available in the following colours:
1) Bronze 2) Brass
3) Copper
4) Stainless Steel Flake
Note: Antique black powder is also available to darken metal finishes.

Mixing with fillers:
Mix the Jesmonite AC 100 powders and liquids at a 2.5: 1 ratio as described in sections 1 and 2 above. It is possible to add metal fillers at an addition rate of 70% -100% by weight to the mixed Jesmonite AC 100. Antique black powder can be added to both the bronze and copper to achieve a richer tone at an addition rate 2g and 5g per kg. The antique black powder should be added to the metal filler prior to addition to the AC 100 mix.
This mix can be used as a casting compound or as a gel coat for a Jesmonite AC 100 laminate. Upon demould the product should be left in a warm dry environment for a minimum of 24 hours. It is now possible to expose the metal filler by gentle abrasion with fine grade wire wool. N. B. Stainless steel does not require abrasion.
After exposing the metal filler is is possible to patinate/oxidise the surface to achieve a 'verdigris' effect. It is also possible to polish the metal surface using, for example, Colron furniture wax.

Sealer
Jesmonite Sealer has a variety of uses. If used neat on the surface of Jesmonite products it will result in a satin finish which gives maximum protection for external use. Two coats are recommended. For internal use, to stop finger marks and achieve a more matt finish, Jesmonite Sealer can be let down with water by 90%. By adding pigments to the watered down mix described above it is possible to create colour washes for patination. This is an artistic effect and as such experimentation should be carried out. It is also possible to create metal top coats for use on Jesmonite products. These can be spray applied using a gravity fed air-mix spray gun fitted with a 1.7mm tip, or stippled on using an appropriate brush.
Bronze, copper and brass should be added to the sealer at a ratio of 2: 1 by weight. Abrasion of the dried surface should be carried out as described in section 8 above. N. B . Stainless steel should be added to the sealer at a ratio of 1:4 by weight (stainless steel to sealer). As before it does not require abrasion but can be polished when dry.

this can be added to weighed liquids to extend pot life. typically between 2g and 6g per kilo of total mix. max pot life about 35mins.
